Heartland: Safety & Medical Alerting System
Challenge:
To develop a system that will enable my staff to promptly notify our church's medical and safety personnel in the event of a medical or safety emergency.
The system and tooling need to be easy to use for any staff member, and the check-in and check-out processes need to be both seamless and fast for our medical and safety personnel.
Process & Solution:
-
Interviewed stake holders
-
Designed mock-ups and system flow diagrams
-
Identified the proper hardware
-
Prior to building the IoT application, we created a hardware simulator to test and build the system
-
Within NuvIoT we:
-
Identified and configured how those messages should be received and processed
-
Put this all together into a NuvIoT Solution
-
Deployed it in the cloud as a NuvIoT Instance
-
-
Identified and configure the messages those devices were going to send
-
Identified and configure the different devices
-
Off-the-shelf hardware was not an option for the check-in / check-out process so we designed and built custom hardware per Heartlands requirements
-
Identified the hardware requirements
-
Used our standard hardware platform and libraries along with some very short custom firmware applications running on the device
-
Identified a proto-type enclosure
-
Used our iOS and Android applications to provision the devices in NuvIoT and configure them on WiFi access points

Designed a user-friendly interface for the team to create and register users and pagers. Ensuring it is intuitive and easy to navigate, even for staff members with minimal technical expertise.
Emergency Categories: Categorized emergencies into medical and safety sections, allowing staff to choose the appropriate category when choosing a notification. This ensures that the correct personnel are alerted promptly.
Real-Time Notifications: Implement a system that sends real-time notifications to designated medical and safety personnel when an emergency alert is triggered. Ensure that these notifications are sent via multiple channels, such as SMS; push notifications, alerting external hardware paging systems.
Check-In and Check-Out Processes: Design straightforward check-in and check-out processes for your medical and safety personnel. These processes should be as simple as confirming the appropriate personnel’s availability or status with a single tap on their end.
Results:
By incorporating the emergency notification system into Heartland, we can ensure that our staff can promptly notify medical and safety personnel during emergencies, resulting in a safer and more secure environment for our congregation.
Heartland is not just about improving safety; it is about fostering a sense of community, trust, and preparedness within our congregation. It sends a clear message that our church takes the well being of our members seriously and is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for worship, fellowship, and all other activities.
